Song of Easter

All the hopes of wise men and of shepherds,

all the dreams of captives in the night,

all the longing of the generations—

nailed upon a cross and crucified.

All the years of watching and of praying,

all the light of prophecies foretold,

all the groaning of the earth, awaiting—

wasted, poured out on the ground, and cold.

Watch them take our hope down from the cross now,

watch them lay His body in a tomb,

watch the soldiers seal it with a stone now—

sealing all our certainty of doom.

Promises of ages—all forgotten,

broken like his body without thought.

Forsaken of the LORD whom we had trusted,

bereft of all the mercy we had sought.

•••

But Yahweh’s ways are not at all like our ways—

all His thoughts are higher than the skies.

We never dreamed that Christ would lay His life down,

and then we never dreamed that He would rise!

Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

Jesus Christ the Lord has died to save.

Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

The LORD our God has risen from the grave!

Forever and forever sing His praises,

people purged by God of all your stains!

Not a single promise is forgotten.

The holy One of Israel still reigns!
